by Tara Westo
Her first book and memoir, written during Tara Westover´s early 30s is a very powerful account of her childhood and teenage years within a survivalist Mormon family in Utah, who did not sent their children to school and also opposed the medical system. I had not expected this book to turn out to be so powerful – it gripped me and I felt drawn to her story and detailed account of her feelings and memories of events. It was as if I became part of this strange family and their behaviour patterns. The undercurrents among the family members sometimes felt so strong that I needed a break from reading, as if I needed to escape from the strange atmosphere and unhealthy manipulations, she describes.
I felt with her and was glad when toward the end of the book, she describes her difficult decision to remove herself from the unhealthy influence of her parents and some of her siblings.
